Malaysia - DE Multimedia has launched Dragon Entertainment TV (DETV), a Chinese centric IPTV service.
DETV, supported by a broadband connection, offers almost 30 channels from China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore. Channels include Hunan World, CCTV Entertainment, Taiwan Macroview, and Xiamen Star.
DETV also offers international news channels like Bloomberg TV, Channel News Asia and Al Jazeera.
In the last two years, DE Multimedia has invested RM10 million on this project.
This service will replace the traditional way of watching television programs in future, according to Wei Chuan Beng who is MD for DE Multimedia.
"From a business point of view, IPTV is a long-term business and investment. The maturity of IPTV technology will gradually lead to the development of content markets which will in turn enhance the interest of content providers," he said.
DE Multimedia, a subsidiary of REDtone Telecommunications, reckons in about three years there will be 3 million broadband users locally.
"As such, the growth of DETV will inevitably catch on. Also, this will push the government to improve the level of broadband services here", Wei said.
Malay and Indian channels will be added at a later date.
