Epidemics and accidents top local search
Hong Kong - Swine Flu, teen pregnancy and bus crashes. No, this is not the beginning of a TVB drama, but three of the most searched key words on Yahoo! Hong Kong in 2009.
Yahoo! Hong Kong's annual Top BUZZ report shows that Swine Flu, the tragic road accident in Tseung Kwan O, along with gossip and celebs news have been the most search topics on its homepage this year.
While Swine Flu topped the local news, 2009 was almost all about youth, with social problems, teen pregnancy and young dating escorts all rating among the most searched terms. The number of searches for Swine Flu matched the Sichuan Earth Quark last year.
This year Hong Kongers also opened their eyes to world news. The Taiwan flooding was in the news spotlight but that is not it. With no exception, the passing of Michael Jackson, which broke many records on Yahoo! in the US, was the third most viewed news on Yahoo! Hong Kong.
In the entertainment list, the rise of young models was a major talking point and there's no surprises with Chrissie Chau seeing her searchability soar. Yahoo Buzz said the rise of young models shifted people’s search focus and should have officially marked the beginning of a new local pop culture.
In political circles, Leung Kwok Hung aks “Long Hair” beat Donald Tsang who came in seventh as the most searched politician.
Hong Kong's fascination with slimming also appears to be thinning out.
Although Slimming has ranked Top in healthcare for two years, the number of searches dropped 10 times than that in 2008.
