Face-to-face discussion still preferred

- Malaysians prefer face-to-face communication
- 100,000 people across 34 countries surveyed
Malaysia - While Generation Y is increasingly turning to instant messaging to communicate with colleagues, a new survey shows people still prefer face-to-face communication at the workplace.
Latest findings from Kelly Services shows the differences in communication styles among Gen Y (aged 18 to 29), Gen X (30 to 47) and baby boomers (aged 48 to 65).
While Generation Y is increasingly turning to instant messaging as a way of communication with colleagues, all age groups still prefer face-to-face communication at the workplace.
Melissa Norman, vice president & country general manager of Kelly Services, said that generational differences can be harnessed positively and when properly managed, can also be a source of growth for the organisation.
The survey also found that 50% of Malaysian respondents say the differences between Gen Y, Gen X and baby boomers make the workplace more productive, while 33% say they interfere with productivity and 9% say they make no difference.
“When the differences between the age groups are harnessed effectively, they can provide a powerful stimulus to creativity and productivity. Rather than trying to smother this diversity, good employers are utilising it to generate fresh ideas and new ways of doing business,” Norman said.
The Kelly Global Workforce Index obtained the views of nearly 100,000 people in 34 countries including almost 2,000 in Malaysia.
