Social Media Club opens doors in Malaysia
- Social Media Club comes to KL
- Is looking for sponsors
- Plans to hold sessions every month
Malaysia - San Francisco based organisation, Social Media Club is setting up a chapter in Kuala Lumpur which is expected to be up and running by as early as next Thursday.
The Social Media Club is a not-for-profit project which brings together people with an interest in creating and consuming all forms of media in the Web 2.0 world. It has chapters in over 100 cities globally but the KL chapter is only its third, behind Mumbai and Seoul, in Asia.
Currently the Social Media Club KL is being supported by around seven volunteers who have managed to bag Chris Brogan as one of the speakers for next week's session which is being sponsored by P1.
"It's a bunch of social media guys coming together to share what they have learned and to have a dialogue with the presenters," Lim Yung Hui, who is one of the seven volunteers, said.
Lim is also the managing director for Grey Insights.
He said the Social Media Club officially launches in Malaysia next month and is looking for sponsors to help fund future events. P1 has opened its office to be the venue for next week's gig and is also sponsoring drinks.
Social Media Club KL plans to hold sessions on every third Thursday of each month which differs to the Malaysian Digital Association organised Web Wednesday events held on the first Wednesday of every month.
A check of the mission statement on the Social Media Club website said the group would focus efforts on expanding media literacy, sharing lessons learned among practitioners, encouraging adoption of industry standards, and promoting ethical practices through discussions and actions.
