Mobile technology boosts personal productivity
KELLY SERVICES MOBILE TECHNOLOGY SURVEY WORK-LIFE BALANCE
Singapore - Most Singaporeans view mobile communications technology as beneficial to their personal productivity, says a recent Kelly Services survey.
With more than 3,000 Singaporeans polled in the Kelly Global Workforce Index, nine out of ten respondents say that despite working longer hours, the ability to work outside the office through mobile communications technology such as smartphones and laptops has had a positive effect on their work-life balance.
Generation Y respondents between ages 18 and 29 place greater importance on a good balance between work and social life (71%) as compared to 64% of Generation X workers and 59% of Baby Boomers.
That said, only 51% of Generation Y respondents are satisfied with their current work-life balance. This is comparably to 59% of Generation X workers and 60% of baby boomers. As a general whole, 54% of Singaporeans are satisfied with their work-life balance. A breakdown of satisfaction levels between males and females also shows that it does not differ with gender.
Dhirendra Shantilal, Asia Pacific senior vice president of Kelly Services, believes mobile devices are creating a more flexible and adaptable workforce. "Many employees now have the capacity to work from home or away from the office at any hour of the day, and this is proving to be positive for productivity and work-life balance. Even though some are working longer hours, this is largely offset by the greater freedom and flexibility of the virtual workplace."
The survey also shows that the attitudes and perceptions of Generation Y workers towards work-life balance differ from those of Generation Y and baby boomers. Shantilal feels employers should note Generation Y workers' emphasis on work-life balance, which is important "if they are keen to attract and retain Generation Y talent".
