Ramadan in around the corner and while food might often be a popular search category it is definitely not all that Malaysians are searching for this month.
Last year, there was notable growth in queries related to Malay fashion, Raya music, weight loss, Muslim prayers and religious practices, and food and recipes.
Month-on-month, those topical searches represent a 40% spike in query volumes, said Google Malaysia.
For the first two weeks, Malaysians concentrated more on prayers and religious practices, while for the last two weeks of Ramadan they start preparing for Raya festivities by shopping for the latest Malay fashion and taking advantage of various shopping promotions. That is when marketers should ideally make their move.
Google’s data also shows consistent spikes in queries every year during Ramadan and Hari Raya for: hampers, almond, duit raya and zakat. The queries for zakat are especially high, led by queries on how to pay zakat online.
In addition, it’s not just Ramadan-related searches that spike during the holy month, video consumption increases as well. YouTube consumption sees a rise during Ramadan with people using it as their primary destination for entertainment and to find how-to videos related to Ramadan and Raya recipes.
