CBCP wants condom ads off air

The Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) is asking the Ads Standard Council (ASC) to prohibit TV networks from airing condom advertisements.“These ads are corrupting the minds and hearts of our young people. And these are being shown in the prime time so the children will be able to watch it,” Fr. Melvin Castro, executive secretary of the CBCP’s Commission on Family and Life, said over Radio Veritas on Tuesday.“It only shows that with or without the RH law they can do everything they want,” he said.Castro (pictured) was referring to the controversial Reproductive Health law, which is currently suspended by the Supreme Court for further review. The proposed law supports the use of contraceptive as means for population control.“The mere fact that they are able to advertise things like that only goes to show that there’s no need for a law really to push their interests,” Castro added.Rather than pitching for condoms, Castro appealed to advertising agencies and brands to make commercials that promote social and moral values.Under the ASC’s Code of Ethics, advertisements are expected to “respect religious beliefs, and be sensitive to the diverse religions, mores, culture, traditions, characteristics, historical background and identity of the various Filipino communities and uphold traditional Filipino family and social values.”
