BMW promotes filmmaking in Malaysia

The BMW Shorties, a CSR project by the BMW Group promoting filmmaking, has just hosted the second edition of its filmmaker’s workshop, “For the Love of Filmmaking”. This is done with the support of the recently created organisation, Next New Wave (FINAS).The second edition of the workshop saw about 100 participants at the new Content Malaysia Pitching Centre. The “For the Love of Filmmaking “ workshop was first launched last year and is an annual event to encourage university students and film makers to venture into the film industry. The one-day workshop aims to provide the film talent community in Malaysia with a platform to learn directly from renowned filmmakers in the Southeast Asian region.Sashi Ambi, head of corporate communications, BMW Group Malaysia said this year, the BMW Shorties has taken a step forward by collaborating with the Next New Wave, "a program that is devoted to bring together the brightest minds in the film industry, be it newcomers or industry veterans, within the Southeast Asian region."“We are proud of where the BMW Shorties is today since its inauguration eight years ago; as we expand the exposure throughout Southeast Asia, we are ensuring the nation’s film talent pool is strengthened,” Ambi said.[gallery link="file" ids="99383,99385,99386"]Tan Chui Mui, a past BMW Shorties judge and director of the workshop said the Next New Wave said:“We believe that with the continuous support, strong collaborations and networking arms among veterans and institutions of the filmmaking industry, emerging filmmakers from Malaysia would gain further opportunities to access the training ground of the film industry at both regional and global.”The second edition of the one-day workshop played out in twofold; beginning with a special screening of a collection of Southeast Asian shorts from the mentors, followed by a series of panel discussion by the mentors. During this session, topics of discussion include “Making Your First Film & What’s Next”, “Things You Don’t Talk About in Filmmaking” and “Filmmaking between Southeast Asian Countries”.
