5 cool ways to run newspaper ads

While newspapers haven't been having the best time, these cool newspaper ads might make advertisers change their minds. Here are five great newspaper ad ideas that should spice up your morning read:1. HBO - Game of ThronesKnowing that its Game of Thrones series is sure to create buzz, HBO placed an ad on the New York Times of a shadow of a dragon looming over two pages of fictional stories.(Photo courtesy: Adweek)Soon after an OOH execution followed on its own balding where a dragon's shadow was seen swooshing over. The Khaleesi would have been proud.2.  Corona KitchenMeanwhile here’s something the folks at Ikea could pick up on.Take a look, what do you see? Just another classified section? Well look closer and you’ll see a 3D image of a Corona Kitchen ad. The optical illusion makes it seem as though the kitchen has been implanted right into the paper and this is done using just rows of words.(Photo courtesy: http://designtaxi.com)3. Johnson & JohnsonIn India, Johnson & Johnson (J&J) recently launched a campaign to bring to life, the ‘Power of Gentle’ proposition for its baby powder range. With the help of media agency OMD, the broadsheets of local newspapers such as The Times of India, and The Hindu were infused with the smell of Johnson & Johnson baby powder. The front page also carried a half page advertisement to connect the scent with the product. The trade mark fragrance of Johnson’s baby powder was supplied by J&J to the publishers, who used a special technology to infuse it on the newspaper. After a pilot phase in Mumbai, the concept was rolled out to multiple cities in India. 4. 20th Century Fox- The Book ThiefMovie marketers have become bolder with their marketing.  Late last year, two empty pages were run consecutively in The New York Times morning paper – and no it was not a printing error. The blank pages were made “printed” in an attempt to promote 20th Century Fox’s upcoming film, “The Book Thief.”While the first page only contained the standard newspaper header, the second ran with the film’s website URL, “wordsarelife.com”.That takes guts for sure![gallery link="file" ids="26284,26283"]5. Chinese Melbourne DailyWhile this wasn’t done by a brand or a marketer – it still gets points for being attention grabbing. In January this year, a desperate Chinese mother had taken out a full front-page advertisement on Chinese Melbourne Daily begging her son to come back home for Chinese New Year. After repeated attempts to force her son into marriage, the Guangzhou-based woman pleads her son, who is working in Australia, to retun back to his family.“We’ve called you many times but you didn’t pick up, maybe this is the only way to let you know.”“Mum and Dad will not force you to marry any more. Come home for Chinese New Year!”Chinese Melbourne Daily is the largest Chinese-language daily newspaper in Melbourne which has a state wide circulation of 15,000-18,000 copies. We sincerely hope there was a happily ever after in there.
